Ready to Paint Your Card?

Find a comfortable place to work and give yourself enough room for your card, pigment palette, water, and paper towel.

1. Set Up Your Space

Place your card on a flat surface. Fill a small cup with clean water and keep a paper towel nearby for blotting your brush or picking up extra water.

2. Wake Up Your Watercolors

Dip the included brush into clean water and gently touch the wet brush to one of the pigments on your watercolor palette.

The water activates the pigment.

If the color feels too strong, add more water. If you want a richer color, pick up a little more pigment.

3. Begin With the Lighter Areas

Watercolor is generally easiest when you work from lighter colors toward darker colors.

You can always add another layer after the first one dries, so there is no need to make everything dark immediately.

4. Paint One Area at a Time

Use the printed design as a loose guide.

You can stay inside the lines, paint outside of them, blend colors together, leave some white paper showing, or completely change the suggested colors.

This is your card.

5. Let Watercolor Do What Watercolor Does

Watercolor sometimes travels farther than expected. Colors may blend together. A drop of water may create an interesting texture.

You do not have to correct every unexpected mark.

Some of the most interesting parts of watercolor happen when you let the paint behave like watercolor.

6. Let Your Card Dry

Once you are happy with your painting, place it somewhere flat and allow it to dry completely.

Then decide what happens next.

Write someone a note. Give it as a gift. Frame it as a tiny original painting.

Or keep it simply because you made it.
